Inferno Comeback Attempt Falls Short

MADISON, WIS.--Alverno College fell short in NACC action against Edgewood College Tuesday, evening.

After the Eagles took a quick 7-2 lead, the Inferno rallied to cut the Edgewood advantage to 9-5. A layup from Gabby Hood saw Alverno head to the second quarter trailing 11-7. 

Throughout the second quarter the Inferno continued to chip away at the Eagle lead. A 7-2 run for the Inferno cut the Eagle lead to 19-17 with 4:19 left until halftime. Later, a layup and made free throw from Karli Selear gave Alverno their first lead of the game 20-19. Two final free throws before halftime gave Alverno a 28-24 advantage into the intermission break. 

With the third quarter underway, the Eagles tied the contest at 30. Both teams continued to trade baskets for the next few minutes with Edgewood taking a 40-36 advantage off a three point field goal. A layup from Alyssa Mane helped the Inferno cut the Edgewood lead to 40-42. A buzzer beating jump shot for Edgewood saw the Eagles control the contest at 44-40 heading to the final quarter. 

Edgewood continued to build their momentum with a 5-0 run. After an Inferno timeout, Mackenzie Mathies connected from beyond the three point line to shrink the Eagle effort. At the 2:59 mark, a layup from Dani Hood shrunk the Edgewood lead to 56-51. The Eagles shut down the Inferno offense who did not register a basket the for the final 2:59 of the contest. Edgewood took the victory by a final score of 61-51. 

Juniors Karli Selear and Mackenzie Mathies finished on the day with 15 points. Dani Hood grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds while Gabby Hood tallied five assists. 

Alverno College will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 6 as they travel to Concordia Wisconsin at 4:15 p.m.
