MILWAUKEE, WIS.—Alverno College basketball fell in close contest to Rockford University Saturday, evening.
The Regents started the contest with a 7-2 run. The Inferno responded with a 6-0 run of their own to take the lead at 8-7. At the 2:30 mark, a Regent jump shot regained the lead for Rockford. Rockford controlled a 15-12 advantage heading to the second quarter.
Back-to-back Regent layups extended the Rockford lead to 19-14. Another 6-0 run for the Inferno helped Alverno take a 20-19 effort. Two final layups for Alverno saw the Inferno head into the intermission break behind 28-27.
Alverno College again collected the lead with a four point swing from Karli Selear. At the 2:39 mark, a Regent layup and later a Regent jump shot saw the lead swing in their favor. Heading to the final quarter Rockford led 45-42.
To begin the final quarter, Mackenzie Mathies tied the game with a three point field goal. A Regent layup gave Rockford a slim 52-49 lead. A jump shot from Karli Selear cut the Regent advantage to 57-55. Later, a layup from Gabby Hood shrunk the Regent lead to 58-57. Clutch free throws for Rockford saw the Regents inch away with the victory 66-60.
Four of the five Inferno starters finished the contest with double digit points. Senior Gabby Hood led the way with 21 points, six rebounds and four assists. Mackenzie Mathies and Karli Selear both contributed with 13 points. Dani Hood finished with a season-high 10 points and seven assists.
Alverno College will be back in action to start the new year as they travel to Edgewood College on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at 7 p.m.
