ST. PETERSBURG, FLA.—Alverno College closed out the final contest of the St. Pete Classic Tournament with a win over Berry College 65-55 Thursday afternoon.
After the Vikings started the first quarter with a quick 6-2 lead, Gabby Hood connected from beyond the three point line to cut the Berry College advantage. The Inferno went on to score seven unanswered points to take a 15-6 lead. A late Vikings layup to end the quarter saw the Inferno head into the second quarter with a 15-11 advantage.
Back-to-back three pointers for Alverno extended the Inferno effort to 21-11. A 6-0 run for the Inferno expanded the Alverno lead to 27-13. Alverno headed into halftime with a 31-27 advantage.
The Vikings continued to cut away at the Inferno lead coming within three early on in the quarter. At the 3:59 mark, Berry College shrunk the Alverno lead to one off a jump shot. Mackenzie Mathies connected on a layup to add to the Alverno effort. Entering the final quarter the Inferno controlled a 40-37 lead.
Berry College connected on three layups to tie and later took the lead to start the quarter. Two free throws from Karli Selear saw the Inferno retake the game at 50-47. Clutch free throw shooting for the Inferno helped seal the victory 65-55.
Junior Karli Selear tallied 20 points, the third time this season she has scored 20 or more points. Selear nearly missed a double-double finishing with eight rebounds. Mackenzie Mathies added 17 points along with five rebounds. Senior Gabby Hood added 16 points, five assists and four rebounds.
Alverno College return to Reiman Gymnasium and NACC play as they welcome Rockford University Saturday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.
