FOND DU LAC, Wis.--Alverno College basketball defeated Marian University Saturday afternoon to pick up their first conference win of the 2017-18 season.
The Inferno started the game fast with a quick 7-0 run. Later, a Mackenzie Mathies three pointer added to the Inferno effort at 12-6. Marian mounted a sudden 7-0 run of their own knotting the game at 15 with 1:26 left in the first quarter. Alverno quickly regained the lead off another three pointer from Kendra Patterson to take a 18-15 into the second quarter.
The Sabres once again regained the lead to start the second quarter off two Marian free throws. A three from Mackenzie Mathies and later a layup by Kendra Patterson gave the Inferno the advantage at 23-19. Off a Sabre turnover that was converted into points, Alverno added to their lead with a layup from Gabby Hood. A three pointer again from Mackenzie Mathies saw the Inferno hold a 38-25 lead into the intermission break.
With momentum on their side, the Inferno continued to connect on all cylinders to start the third quarter. At the 3:53 mark, Gabby Hood converted on a layup to extend the Inferno effort to 11. Kendra Patterson converted on a layup attempt to give the Inferno a 52-42 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Marian would get as close as nine in the final quarter as the Inferno shooting from beyond the three point arch was too much for the Sabres. Alverno cruised to claim the victory over Marian 69-54.
Offensively, Mackenzie Mathies finished with a career-high in points with 28 points shooting 7-14 from the three point line tying the record for most three pointers in a single game. Junior Kendra Patterson added 13 points, six rebounds and five assists to the Inferno effort. Senior Gabby Hood tallies nine points, six assists and two steals.
