Inferno roll past Blue Angels in crosstown showdown

MILWAUKEE, Wis.—In a crosstown showdown with Mount Mary, Alverno College basketball defeated the Blue Angels to collect their first victory of the season.

The Inferno jumped out on the Blue Angels early with a quick 8-4 lead. Alverno then went on a 12-0 run to close out the quarter with the Inferno holding the advantage 20-4. Another 7-2 run in the second quarter saw Alverno up on the Blue Angels 27-8 heading into the intermission break.

Mount Mary started the third quarter cutting away at the Inferno deficit, however, Alverno responded to regain an 18 point lead. Four points from the free throw line extended the Inferno advantage to 20 with 2:50 left in the third. Alverno shut out the Blue Angels for the remainder of the quarter holding a commanding 43-18 advantage.

The sizeable lead from the Inferno was too much for the Blue Angels as Alverno College took the victory by a final score of 52-29. 

Leading the way for the Inferno was Mackenzie Mathies who finished on the day with 14 points and five rebounds. Gabby Hood grabbed 12 rebounds and six points while senior Melissa Weyand collected 10 rebounds. Karlie Selear chipped in with nine points and two assists. Defensively, the Inferno held Mount Mary to 20 percent from the field.

Alverno College returns to NACC play Saturday, Dec. 2 against Marian University at 2 p.m.
