RIVER FOREST, Ill.—The Alverno College basketball team fell in NACC action to Concordia University Chicago Saturday afternoon.
Alverno started the contest with a quick 7-4 advantage. With under three minutes left in the quarter, Concordia Chicago held a lead at 13-8. The Inferno closed out the quarter with a 4-0 run. Heading to the second quarter of play, Concordia Chicago led 17-14.
The Inferno started the quarter with an Alyssa Mane layup however, both teams battled back and forth with Concordia holding a seven point lead with under six minutes to play. A jump shot from Gabby Hood saw the Inferno trailing heading into the intermission break 41-32.
Alverno and Concordia continued to trade baskets to begin the third quarter. Concordia Chicago gained momentum to add to their effort. Heading into the final quarter, the Inferno saw themselves down 66-49.
In the final quarter, the Cougars mounted a 6-2 run to widen the lead. Alverno fought hard throughout the quarter with Mackenzie Mathies adding a three pointer to the Inferno effort. The strong shooting in the third quarter from the Cougars was the difference as Concordia Chicago took the first NACC contest 85-64.
Mackenzie Mathies collected 19 points and seven rebounds in the contest while senior Gabby Hood recorded her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Karli Selear chipped in with nine points and seven assists.
Alverno College will be back in action Tuesday, Nov. 28 with a non-conference matchup with Mount Mary at 6:30 p.m.
