NACC Tournament Semifinal Preview

The Alverno College basketball team huddles before a game.

The Inferno basketball team used a last-second free throw to advance to the semifinal round of the 2017 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.

Sixth-seeded Alverno College (13-13) upset third-seeded Benedictine University (19-7), 64-63, in the first round of the NACC Tournament Tuesday night in Lisle, Illinois.

Gabby Hood was fouled with one second remaining and made 1-of-2 free throws to put the Inferno on top, and Donna Zehner stole the Eagles' inbound pass to secure the victory.

Alverno will head up to second-seeded Lakeland University for a semifinal game Thursday night at 7.

The Muskies (18-7) received a first-round bye after a second-place finish in the NACC standings. Lakeland has won five straight games including a 62-54 decision at Benedictine last Saturday in the regular-season finale.

The Inferno was swept by the Muskies in the regular-season series by scores of 74-67 and 83-74, and trails in the all-time series 7-18.

The two teams have met just once in the postseason, the first round of the 2010 NACC Tournament which the Muskies prevailed in overtime, 67-61, up in Plymouth.

Thursday's winner will advance to the tournament final to take on the winner of the other semifinal game which pits fourth-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran College (16-9) at top-seeded Concordia University Wisconsin (21-4). The championship will tip off at 2 p.m. Saturday at the highest-remaining seed.
