MILWAUKEE -- Senior center Mollie Mikyska became the third 1,000-point scorer in Alverno College history Saturday night as the host Inferno topped Marian University, 74-62, inside Reiman Gymnasium.
Mikyska entered the game eight points shy of the milestone and scored three of Alverno's first four field goals to give the hosts a 9-2 lead early in the first quarter and pull within two points of 1,000.
She had to wait 10 more minutes but scored her eighth point of the night on a layup at the 7:23 mark of the second quarter to join Hall of Famers Gabby Allen and Lisa Sorgi in the 1,000-points club.
The Inferno trailed by as many as eight in the second but ended the quarter with a 10-2 run to even the score at 39 apiece.
Alverno kept rolling and opened with the first 13 points of the third quarter and led by double digits the rest of the way to cruise to its second straight win.
Mikyska ended her last home game with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, while fellow seniors Tessa Mersberger added seven points and three assists and Katelyn Bartlett scored six points and snagged nine rebounds.
The senior-class trio, who won their 50th game, was honored in a ceremony before tipoff.
Mackenzie Mathies made five triples on the night for a game-high 19 points, while Donna Zehner added 12 points. Gabby Hood registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and shared game-high honors with Mathies as they each dished out five assists.
The Inferno (12-13, 12-8 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) crushed the Sabres on the glass 52-32, and forced 17 turnovers.
Marian (4-21, 3-17 NACC) was led by Brandi Bender and Nicole Paulus who scored 15 points each and Brianna Horton who added 14.
Alverno, which earned the No. 6 seed in the NACC Women's Basketball Tournament, will travel to take on host and No. 3 seed Benedictine University Tuesday night for a first-round contest. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. down in Lisle, Illinois.
