Alverno College opens the 2013 postseason with a Northern Athletics Conference women's basketball tournament quarterfinal game at Benedictine University on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Inferno (16-9, 13-5 NAC) finished in a tie for second place in the North Division and were awarded the No. 5 seed in the eight-team tournament, while the Eagles (13-12, 11-6) took second in the South Division for the No. 4 seed.
Alverno has won four straight including a 50-45 road victory over North Division champion Concordia University Wisconsin in Wednesday's regular season finale. Versus the tournament's participants, the Inferno went 5-5.
Benedictine has won its last two games including a 67-43 victory over Concordia University Chicago on Wednesday to secure the home game on Saturday. Also 5-5 against the tournament field, one of the wins was a 52-45 victory over Alverno back on Jan. 26, in the teams' lone regular season meeting.
Back in 2010, the Inferno's only previous trip to the NAC tournament, Alverno lost its quarterfinal game at eventual champion Lakeland College, 67-61, in overtime as the No. 6 seed.
Alverno is 0-3 all-time in the postseason, which includes a pair of opening round losses in the former Lake Michigan Conference tournament. Alverno trails Benedictine 12-2 in the all-time series.
The winner of Saturday's matchup will play the winner of the No. 8 Lakeland College at No. 1 Wisconsin Lutheran College in the tournament semifinals next Wednesday or Thursday.
Alverno will provide a live audio broadcast of Saturday's game on its UStream channel, while host Benedictine will provide live stats and video. Links are available on athletics.alverno.edu.
