Inferno Rings In New Year With Conference Play

MILWAUKEE -- The second half of the 2012-13 schedule begins with a pair of Northern Athletics Conference home games for Alverno College, as the Inferno hosts Concordia University Chicago Thursday night and Aurora University Saturday night.

The Inferno went 6-6 (3-2 NAC) in the first half of the season, and has conference play on the reminder of the schedule. The team is in the middle of a five-game homestand, having split the first two contests with a victory over Trinity Christian College and a loss to University of Wisconsin-Superior last weekend.

Concordia Chicago (2-9, 2-3 NAC) enters Thursday's contest on a four-game skid, coming off a pair of losses at the Wartburg College Holiday Tournament last week. Freshman- forward Angelik Young led the Cougars with 12.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while shooting nearly 60 percent from the floor in the holiday event as she picked up all-tournament honors.

The Cougars lead the all-time series 14-4, but the Inferno won last season's single meeting, 49-38, down in River Forest.

Aurora (5-7, 2-3 NAC) is coming off a split at a tournament hosted by the University of Dubuque. The Spartans lost to the host team in the opener before they defeated St. Mary's College (Ind.), 64-62, on a Ciara Marlow layup in the game's final seconds. Marlow led the Spartans with 16 points in the win, while Shay Jenkins led all scorers with 20 points in the loss to Dubuque.

Just halfway through the season, the Spartans have nearly tripled their win total from last year's 2-23 record.

One of the Spartans' victories last season was a 69-68 half-court buzzer-beater over Alverno in early December at Aurora. The win snapped the Inferno's two-game win streak in the all-time series, which the Spartans lead 8-2.

Both games tip off at 7 p.m. in Reiman Gymnasium and will have live stats and video available via
