MILWAUKEE – The Alverno softball schedule has been revealed for the upcoming 2019 season as announced by first-year head coach Ben Lipson. This year the Inferno will have 40 contests on the originally scheduled docket beginning with the first 10 in central Florida.
Last season the Inferno went 14-24 on the year with a 6-16 mark in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play as the team will look to build upon last season's success and propel themselves into the conference championship picture.
The year will begin as it has for the last two seasons, and four of the last five seasons; with a trip to Florida to kick off the year. The 10-game Florida set is currently slated for 10 games over six days, but may still be subject to change.
The year will kick off with the Pilgrims of New England College out of New Hampshire at 10:15 a.m. central time in Clermont, Florida on Sunday, March 3. Later in the afternoon, Alverno will take on Concordia-Moorhead out of Minnesota. The following day the Inferno will battle with Regis of Massachusetts, and Mitchell of Connecticut before a day off on Tuesday, March 5.
On Wednesday, March 6 the team wakes up bright and early to take on Saint Vincent out of Pennsylvania, before taking on Bridgewater from Virginia. Bates will be Alverno's first opponent on March 7, with the Bobcats hailing from Maine. Following the matchup with Bates, Alverno will take on Houghton for the second straight season in Florida, with last year's win for the Inferno going to extra innings as Alverno won 7-6 in nine innings.
The final day in Florida will see the Inferno take on Sage College from Troy, New York, before wrapping up with Saint Elizabeth out of New Jersey before heading back to The Badger State.
Upon their arrival back to Wisconsin, the Inferno will open up play on the road on Saturday, March 23 to take on Beloit for its first doubleheader of the season. The team will have its home opener a few days later when Lawrence visits the Inferno Softball Field on Thursday, March 28.
Conference play begins two days later when the Inferno host Concordia Wisconsin for a 12 p.m. start. The month of March comes to a close the following day with a conference doubleheader at Wisconsin Lutheran.
April gets underway with six straight from the confines of home beginning with non-conference Carroll on April 3, followed by NACC foes Aurora on April 6 and Benedictine on April 7. The team visits Lakeland on April 13 and then Marian a day later to wrap-up a quick two-day, four-game road trip to the northern reaches of the conference.
In a mid-week battle the Inferno will host MSOE beginning at 3 p.m. on April 17 before hosting Mount Mary on April 19 at 12 p.m. on a Friday. The team will close out the weekend with a doubleheader at home against Edgewood on April 20.
The final week of the regular season will begin with a trip to Rockford on Monday, April 22 before the final road doubleheader takes place on Friday, April 26 at Concordia Chicago. The regular season comes to a close on Saturday, April 27, when the Inferno host the Dominican Stars to wrap-up the regular season slate.
The conference tournament will not take place at Alverno this year, as it has for the past decade, as the scene will shift to Aurora beginning on Thursday, May 2 and extending to Saturday, May 4, where a conference champion and NCAA automatic qualifying berth will be granted to the league champion.
