RIVER FOREST, Illinois -- Alverno College dropped both games of a doubleheader to host Concordia University Chicago Saturday afternoon at CUC Softball Field.
The host Cougars (20-12, 10-6 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) won the opener 8-0 followed by a 5-2 win in the closer.
The Inferno (10-22, 3-13 NACC) couldn't get much going on the base paths in game one as the visitors tallied just two hits and reached two more times via walk.
Sara Redlin drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but Alverno came out empty in the inning.
Van Dyke (10-6) got the shutout win while Ashlie Rossi (5-12) was hit with the loss in the circle as CUC scored a run in the first, three in the second and four in the fifth innings off nine hits and a pair of walks.
In game two, Johnson got the Inferno on the board in the first inning as she plated Chloe Fleming on a fielder's choice to the shortstop.
The Cougars evened the score as Melissa Balkema led off the bottom half of the inning with a home run and then scored four runs in the third inning on four hits and an error.
The four-run third proved to be too much to overcome for the visitors as Andie Vandertie knocked home Johnson for the only other score of the contest in the top of the sixth.
Courtney Pepper (5-3) gave up four hits in five innings of work to earn the win while Olivia Schneider (5-10) pitched a complete game but picked up the loss.
The Inferno closes out its busy six-game weekend Sunday as it hosts Dominican University. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at Alverno Field.
