Inferno Earns Series Split With Host Sabres

FOND DU LAC -- After a 12-2 game one loss, Alverno College won game two 3-1 to earn a series split with host Marian University Monday evening at Smith Field.

The visiting Inferno (10-16, 3-7 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) struck first in the opener as Samantha Chapnick scored Bailey Jedrzejewski via an RBI-single to right field in the top of the first.

The Sabres (20-10, 8-6) responded with eight runs in the bottom of the first on four hits, three walks, and an error then added three more in the third inning for a 10-run lead.

Alverno got a run in the fourth as Megan Hernandez singled to center field to plate Chloe Fleming but Marian added one more in the bottom of the inning for the last score of the contest.

Shannon Huray (11-6) earned the win in the pitcher's circle while Olivia Schneider (5-8) was tagged with the loss.

In the nightcap, the Inferno again opened the game with a first-inning run as Kaitlynn Johnson connected for an RBI-double that scored Jedrzejewski.

Fleming and Carina Jimenez hit back-to-back RBI-singles in the second to give the Inferno a 3-0 lead before the Sabres took advantage of an Alverno error in the fourth to make it 3-1.

Ashlie Rossi (5-8) allowed just one hit over the final three innings and earned the complete-game victory while Paige Rauhut (8-4) got the loss in the circle.

The Inferno has Tuesday off before a doubleheader at Lakeland University Wednesday at 3 p.m.
