MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College shut out visiting Maranatha Baptist University on both sides of a doubleheader sweep Tuesday evening in the Inferno's home opener.
Alverno (6-6) earned the 8-0 game-one victory in six innings and rolled to a 10-0 triumph in five innings in the nightcap.
The hosts swiped 10 bases in the opener -- a new single-game school record -- and surpassed the former single-season mark of 33 with their fourth of the contest. The Inferno added eight more in game two to bring the tally to 48 less than a third of the way through the season.
"The goal is to take what we want, not what they give us," Alverno Head Coach Ryan Konitzer said about his aggressive base running. "The team is having a lot of fun with it."
The Sabercats (2-6) were limited to just six hits over the twin bill as the three Inferno pitchers surrendered just two hits apiece.
In the opener, six different Inferno batters picked up hits while Adria Bollendorf led the way with a pair of RBIs.
Mackenzie Mathies and Andie Vandertie collected two hits each in the nightcap while Bailey Jedrzejewski knocked in two runs and Kaitlynn Johnson blasted a two-run homer to cap off a five-run first inning.
The wins were the 11th and 12th consecutive over Maranatha, the former conference foe, including the sixth and seventh shutouts in the past eight meetings.
The Inferno returns to Alverno Field tomorrow afternoon for the second of four home series this week. First pitch versus Carroll University is scheduled for 3 p.m.
