NAPLES, Florida -- Alverno College won both its games Wednesday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic and improved to 3-3 on the trip.

The Inferno topped New Jersey City University, 3-2, in eight innings and then defeated Bridgewater State University, 4-0, to climb to .500 on the young season.

In the opener, Kristin Holub laid down a perfect squeeze bunt on a 3-2 pitch which allowed pinch runner Becca Skrobis to score the walk-off winner.

The Gothic Knights (3-2) scored a pair runs off three hits in the top of the first for the early lead.

Both teams put up zeroes on the scoreboard until Carina Jimenez singled home Samantha Chapnick with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. An NJCU fielding error allowed the tying run to score during the next at-bat and neither team threatened in the sixth or seventh which sent the game to the extra frame and allowed the squeeze play to end it in favor of Alverno.

Bailey Jedrzejewski smashed a pair of doubles, Kaitlynn Johnson had a two-bagger in a pinch-hit appearance while Mackenzie Mathies swiped two bases to lead the offense.

Olivia Schneider (1-1) earned her first win of the season in the circle with six strikeouts and no walks in the full 8.0 innings of work in the third straight extra-inning affair for Alverno.

Ashlie Rossi (2-2) hurled her fourth-career shutout versus the Bears (4-4) as she allowed just three hits and didn't walk a batter.

The Inferno took advantage of a BSU miscue to plate a run in the top of the first and then scored three runs on three hits and an error in the third.

Jedrzejewski, Jimenez and Andie Vandertie all recorded RBI-hits while Holub and Chapnick accounted for the other two Alverno hits in the contest. Chapnick's double was the only extra-base hit of the game.

Active on the base paths, six different Inferno players registered stolen bases, just one off the single-game school record.

Alverno has an off day tomorrow then returns to action Friday versus University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Kenyon College. First pitch is at 9 a.m. Eastern at the CenturyLink Sports Complex in Fort Myers.
