VERONA, Wisconsin -- It was a strong start to the final weekend of Alverno College's 2016 softball season as the Inferno swept host Edgewood College by scores of 6-2 and 8-1 Friday afternoon.
Megan Hernandez' two-out three-run home run in the top of the sixth put Alverno ahead 4-2 in the opener. The rookie third baseman hit her second homer of the year to center field off a 2-1 pitch to give the visitors the lead, and three consecutive base hits followed as Alexis Botsford drove in an insurance run to make it 5-2.
Hernandez then added her fourth RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly in the seventh for the final run of the game. Carina Jimenez gave the Inferno the team's first run in the top of the first with an RBI single up the middle.
Olivia Schneider picked up her seventh win of the season in the complete-game victory as she scattered eight hits and two runs while striking out six Eagles. With the six Ks, Schneider became just the third pitcher in school history to record 100 strikeouts in a season, joining Erin Dulek, who did so both in 2014 and 2015, and Jessica Goetz, who accomplished the feat 2008, 2009, and 2010.
The Inferno bats remained hot in game two as Alverno outhit Edgewood 13-5 in the seven-run victory.
Samantha Chapnick -- who led the Inferno with three hits in the nightcap -- plated Botsford to begin the four-run first inning before Hernandez laced a two-run single up the middle. An Eagle error allowed the final run of the Inferno's at-bat to score.
Edgewood (14-24, 6-14 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) got its lone score of the game from a leadoff home run in the bottom of the second, but Jimenez got the run back for Alverno (15-23, 6-14 NACC) in the next inning as her leadoff single came around to score on a wild pitch three batters later.
The Inferno scored the final three runs of the afternoon in the top of the sixth as Andie Vandertie plated a pair on a single to center field and Jimenez placed a similar hit to send home another run.
Ashlie Rossi collected her eighth win in the circle as she struck out seven and walked just two in the complete-game victory.
Alverno closes out the season with a home series Saturday against Rockford University at 12 p.m.
