MILWAUKEE -- Visiting Concordia University Chicago took both games of a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader from Alverno College Saturday afternoon as the Inferno ended a 10-game homestand.
The Cougars (21-10, 9-7 NACC) rallied and scored four runs in the final inning to win the opener, 5-3, and then took the nightcap, 5-1.
The Inferno (13-21, 4-12) took a 2-1 lead by scoring a pair of runs in the first inning of game one. Alexis Botsford added to her NCAA-leading stat of hit-by-pitches and reached base to lead off the inning and stole home on a double-steal two batters later. Mackenzie Mathies then took advantage of a CUC error and scored on a dropped fly ball to put Alverno in front.
Olivia Schneider made it 3-1 in the fifth with a single up the middle to score Botsford for the second time in the game, but then the Cougars' four-run seventh inning put the visitors in front in the final frame.
Alverno struck first in game two as Andie Vandertie scored Botsford on a sacrifice fly to center field. Yet the Inferno batters weren't able to cross home plate again and left seven runners stranded in the game-two loss.
CUC scored two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to make it 4-1 and then added an insurance run in the seventh to keep the Inferno at bay.
Botsford and Ashlie Rossi had two hits apiece in the second game.
Schneider and Rossi each took a loss in the circle and had nearly identical lines in their starts as each surrendered four runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Alverno looks to bounce back from the home losses as the team hits the road for a NACC doubleheader tomorrow at Dominican University. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. in Rosemont, Illinois.
