MILWAUKEE -- A 2-1 game-one victory earned host Alverno College a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader split with Marian University Sunday at Alverno Field.
The visiting Sabres (18-10, 7-5 NACC) took game two of the series, 12-5, over the Inferno (11-19, 4-10).
Olivia Schneider tossed a complete game to earn the victory in the opener. The sophomore left-hander scattered eight hits over seven innings of work to earn her fifth victory of the season.
Alverno took advantage of a Marian fielding error with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the first to score the first run of the game.
The Sabres tied it up in the fifth before Dani Hood scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth.
Marian's leadoff hitter in the seventh reached and came around to third base but Schneider struck out the visitors' final batter to capture the victory.
In the nightcap, the Sabres scored in five of the seven innings which included four runs in both the second and sixth to get past the Inferno.
Andie Vandertie led the Alverno offense with a pair of hits and RBIs and Megan Hernandez also batted 2-for-3 but it wasn't enough to keep up with Marian's 14 hits. Sam Korn and Mackenzie Mathies also tallied RBIs in the contest.
The Inferno hosts its final nonconference doubleheader of the season Thursday as Maranatha Baptist University visits Alverno Field.
