AURORA, Illinois -- Defending Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Champion Aurora University defeated visiting Alverno College in both games of a doubleheader Tuesday evening.
The host Spartans won by scores of 10-2 and 11-6 to improve to 13-5 (4-0 NACC) while the Inferno fell to 8-12 (1-3 NACC).
An Ashlie Rossi sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning gave Alverno a 1-0 lead, but Aurora answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Alexis Botsford was hit by pitch with the bases loaded in the second to make it 3-2, but the Inferno didn't score again as the Spartans added seven over the final four innings to take game one.
In the nightcap, Alverno used a four-run third inning to take a 5-4 lead. After Leah Badke knocked home the Inferno's first run with an RBI-single in the second, Bailey Jedrzejewski began the scoring in the third with an RBI-single up the middle. Rossi followed with a two-run double and came around to score on a wild pitch later in the inning.
Aurora responded with four runs of its own in the bottom of the third before Mackenzie Mathies was hit by pitch with the bases loaded to close the gap to 8-6. Again the Spartans answered back, this time with three runs for the final tallies of the day.
Next up for the Inferno is a NACC doubleheader at Concordia University Wisconsin Saturday at noon.
