LISLE, Illinois -- Kristin Ortman earned her 100th career coaching victory as Alverno College defeated host Benedictine University, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener.
"It was a great win over a top team in our conference which shows how far our program has come over the past few years," said Ortman, who is in her seventh season as head coach of the Inferno. "Aligning No. 100 with the program's first-ever win over Benedictine made the win even more meaningful."
The win was the first for Alverno against the Eagles in the all-time series that dates back to 2006.
The Inferno (8-10, 1-1 NACC) quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Ashlie Rossi scored Kristin Holub on a double to right-center field. Rossi came around to score on an Eagle error during a Megan Hernandez at bat.
In the top of the third, Carina Jimenez provided an insurance run as she plated Hernandez on an RBI-single to left field.
Olivia Schneider (4-7) went the distance to earn her first shutout of the season and third of her career. The sophomore southpaw scattered five hits over seven innings.
Alverno was blanked in game two as Benedictine (11-7, 1-1) pounded out 11 runs on 13 hits and limited the Inferno to just a pair of base hits. Rossi and Sidney Behlendorf hit safely in the nightcap for the visitors.
Next up for the Inferno is a NACC doubleheader at defending champion Aurora University Tuesday at 3 p.m.
