EUREKA, Illinois -- Megan Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth to give Alverno College a 6-5 extra-inning victory over host Eureka College to earn a series split on the day. The host Red Devils won the opener, 5-0.
Mathies also scored on a wild pitch in the eighth followed by an RBI-double by Ashlie Rossi to give Alverno a two-run lead, but a two-run home run by Eureka's Lexi Litwiller sent the game to the ninth before Hernandez scored Samantha Chapnick for the game's final run.
Rossi (2-0) pitched the full nine innings for her second complete game of the year with six strikeouts, and also recorded three hits -- two doubles and a single -- to tie Hernandez for game-high honors on the offensive side of the plate.
In the afternoon's opening game the host Red Devils (8-2) scored a pair of runs in the opening inning and tagged on three more in the fifth for the only scoring of the game.
The Inferno had six hits led by Chapnick and Sidney Behlendorf's two apiece, but the team stranded eight base runners in the game.
Olivia Schneider (3-3) had five Ks and walked just one in the complete-game loss.
Next up for Alverno (5-3) is its home opener Tuesday versus Beloit College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Alverno Field.
