SPRINGFIELD, Illinois -- Alverno College connected for 16 hits and 13 runs in a doubleheader split with host Robert Morris University-Springfield Saturday afternoon.
The visiting Inferno (4-2) rallied twice in the opener for the game-one victory. A three-run fifth inning was capped off by Samantha Chapnick's two-RBI single which gave the visitors a 3-2 lead. The Eagles (4-7) answered back to retake the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fifth, however, before Alverno started its rally in the seventh.
An infield error by RMU allowed two Inferno base runners to cross home plate, and Chapnick scored Alexis Botsford on a sacrifice fly for an insurance run and the final 6-4 lead.
Olivia Schneider allowed the Eagles to load the bases in the final at bat, but struck out the side to earn her third win of the season with eight Ks in the full seven innings of work.
In the nightcap, Alverno jumped out to an impressive 7-0 lead after a seven-run third inning, but RMU scored eight over the final four innings for the 8-7 walk-off win.
Schneider (3-2) was tagged with the loss after 1.2 innings of relief in the circle and Ashlie Rossi went 4.2 with three strikeouts in the start.
Alverno (4-2) continues the road trip in central Illinois with a twin bill at Eureka College Sunday at 12 p.m.
