Dulek Fans 13 As Alverno Earns Split

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Erin Dulek tied her career high with 13 strikeouts in Alverno College's 2-0 shutout of Cedar Crest College Wednesday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The Inferno lost Wednesday's opening game to Bluffton University, 4-2.

Versus the Beavers (3-2) the Inferno scored a pair of first-inning runs for an early 2-0 lead.

Alexis Botsford doubled down the left-field line to lead off the bottom of the inning and Emily Ortner scored the rookie infielder on a base hit to right field after a sacrifice bunt by Raquel Starke. A two-out error by the Bluffton third baseman allowed Ortner to score three batters later.

However the Inferno (3-5) managed just two more hits the rest of the game--singles by Ashleigh Sagat and Kristin Holub--while the Beavers scored a run in the fourth and three in the fifth off a total of eight hits and an Inferno error.

Megan Rossi (1-2) was tagged with the loss recording a strikeout and a walk in 4.2 innings pitched, while Bluffton's Chloe Shell (2-2) recorded five Ks and two walks in the complete-game victory.

Alverno's offense connected for eight hits against Cedar Crest (0-3), but scored just a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

A leadoff walk by Ortner would come full circle after a sacrifice bunt by Sagat and a passed ball would put the sophomore infielder on third base. Holub walked, and the double steal was successful to plate the game's first run.

Stephanie Skibba, who was 3-for-3 at the plate, singled down the left-field line to score Holub for the final run of the morning. It was the sophomore second baseman's first-career three-hit game.

Dulek (2-3) took care of the Falcons with her 13 Ks, as she scattered three hits and didn't allow a walk in her fourth-career shutout.

The Falcon's Alexis Baxter (0-3) had four strikeouts and three walks in the complete-game loss.

Bre Hart went 2-for-3 at the plate for her first multi-hit game of the young season.

Alverno will look to even out its spring trip record tomorrow in its final day at the Cusic Classic. The Inferno opens play at 9 a.m. eastern time against Kenyon College, followed by an 11 a.m. game versus Olivet College.
