MILWAUKEE -- First pitch of the 2013 softball season has nearly arrived. Alverno College opens the season with a three-series trip to Texas to face three new opponents this week.
The Inferno (17-21, 10-14 Northern Athletics Conference in 2012) begins play at Austin College on Thursday (5 p.m.), takes on the University of Dallas on Saturday (2 p.m.) and ends the trip at Huston-Tillotson University on Sunday (1 p.m.).
Austin was 13-29 overall and 7-9 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference last season. The Kangaroos finished third in the SCAC Western Division and earned a berth to the conference tournament for the second time in program history. Austin hit .272 and had a 4.81 ERA. Thursday's doubleheader is also the season opener for the Kangaroos.
Dallas, also a member of the SCAC, was fifth in the Western Division with a 1-15 record in league play and 9-27 overall. The Crusaders had a .233 batting average and a 5.46 ERA in 2012. Saturday will be the season opener for Dallas.
Huston-Tillotson finished 2012 with a 12-19 overall record and 10-13 in the Red River Athletic Conference. The Rams just missed out on the conference tournament with a seventh-place finish in the standings. In 2012 the Rams hit .268 and had a 4.28 ERA, but committed 113 errors for a .907 fielding percentage. The Rams opened the 2013 season with a doubleheader at Division I Texas Southern University on Saturday and were swept, 15-0 and 10-0.
