Defending tourney champs take two from Alverno

Bre HartMEQUON, Wis. -- Alverno College lost a pair of conference games to the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons, the defending Northern Athletics Conference tournament champions, by scores of 5-3 and 9-1 this afternoon on the Concordia campus north of Milwaukee.

Trailing 3-1 in the top of the sixth inning in game one, the Inferno would string together a trio of hits including a two-out single to left field by freshman first baseman Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) which send both Jessica Goetz (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther) and Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central) across home plate to tie the score at 3-3. Goetz and Wilmore each recorded a hit earlier in the inning, as Goetz singled to left field and Wilmore got her ninth double of the season with a smash down the left-field line.

Senior pitcher Jessica Goetz (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale Martin Luther), who threw all 10 innings in both games, and Alverno's defense were able to hold off Aurora through the first two innings of the first game until they exploded for four runs on four hits in the third inning. Inferno lose heartbreaker, but come together for win in game two

Roxanne KresmerWAUKESHA, Wis. -- Alverno College split a nonconference doubleheader with host Carroll University today at Kilgour Field today, losing 1-0 on a walk-off homer in extra innings in game one before winning 6-3 in the second game of the twin bill.

The heartbreaking loss in game one was one that could have been avoided. "We had a critical running error in the sixth that took us out of the inning," Alverno head coach Kristin Kosobucki said.

With one out in the top of the sixth inning and runners on second and third, freshman second baseman Roxanne Kresmer (South Milwaukee, Wis.) hit fly ball to right field attempting the sacrifice fly, but senior pitcher Jessica Goetz (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther) was also called out on the play for leaving the base early.

"We also left a good amount of runners on base," Kosobucki said, referring to the eight stranded in the game. "We just couldn't get them across the plate. Bases were loaded in the third with no outs, and we just couldn't get a hit there."
