Kochanowski (left), LaFond and Brenner (right)MILWAUKEE -- The Northern Athletics Conference has announced the league's awards for the 2009 women's soccer season and four Alverno College student-athletes received honors.

Ellie LaFond was named to the All-NAC First Team, Alex Brenner received All-NAC honorable mention, Kelsey Kochanowski also received All-NAC honorable mention in addition to being named to the All-Freshman team, and Kelly Sunstrom was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team.

"It's exciting for the program and the whole team," Alverno head coach Brittany Nikolic said. "The way we played this year allowed us to get this representation, but obviously it's great individual honors for these four."

Alverno Soccer wraps up season with loss to Dominican, celebrates seniors' contributions

The Coaches and Seniors celebrate 'Senior Day'MILWAUKEE -- The final contest of the 2009 season didn't exactly go as smoothly as the Alverno College women's soccer team could have hoped, as the Inferno were shut out by Dominican University, 7-0, in Northern Athletics Conference play on Wednesday afternoon on Senior Day at Alverno Field.

The Inferno (7-12, 2-9 NAC) fell behind early in the first half, playing shorthanded without their biggest scoring threat, senior forward Ellie LaFond (Waukesha, Wis./West), due to an injury incurred in this past Saturday's game with Edgewood College. The Stars notched three goals within the first 20 minutes of play, heading into halftime with a 5-0 advantage, and continued to pour on the offensive firepower in the second half to score twice more.

Slow start dooms Inferno Soccer in 9-0 shutout loss to Edgewood

MILWAUKEE -- Sluggish play in the opening minutes of the Alverno College women's soccer team's Northern Athletics Conference game with Edgewood College put the Inferno in a deep hole early, as the home squad allowed the Eagles to score three times within the first 10 minutes of play en route to a 9-0 shutout on Saturday morning on Alverno's home field.

"We didn't start well today," said Alverno head coach Brittany Oliveira. "We've had a bit of trouble getting up for weekend games, and I'm not sure what the problem is there. We still need to work on keeping our mental focus high and pushing through being tired as the week goes on. We didn't start with intensity and we didn't get a lot of pressure on the ball quickly enough early in the game. Credit to Edgewood for taking advantage of their chances and finishing."

Defending NAC champs too much for Inferno

MILWAUKEE -- Trailing only 1-0 at the half to the three-time defending Northern Athletics Conference champion Aurora University, the Alverno College women's soccer team played arguably one of their best halves of the 2009 season. Yet the visiting Spartans overpowered the Inferno 5-2 in the second half for the 6-2 conference victory at Alverno Field.

"I was really proud of the way we played and how hard we played for the entire game," Alverno head coach Brittany Oliveira said. "We've come a long way since our first conference game. We're playing at a much better level, playing smarter soccer and playing as a team too. It was also nice to get a couple of goals towards the end and finally score on them."

Flat first half leads to loss for Inferno Soccer vs. Lakeland

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. -- It was too little too late for the Alverno College women's soccer team in today's Northern Athletics Conference face-off with Lakeland College, as the Inferno fell 3-1 on the road on Saturday afternoon.

The Inferno (7-9, 3-6 NAC) struggled through a sub-par first half that left them down, 1-0, at the intermission. The second period saw an improved effort, but a goal by senior midfielder Alex Brenner (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) in the 79th minute on an assist from senior forward Ellie LaFond (Waukesha, Wis./West) wasn't enough to boost their squad to victory as the Muskies found the back of the net twice more in the half.
