Alverno has 29 Student-Athletes Recognized by NACC for Academic Efforts

MILWAUKEE – The Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference announced its 2018-19 Scholar-Athletes on Wednesday. This year Alverno had 29 student-athletes earn academic accolades from the conference.

Alverno was led by the softball team with 11 earning scholar-athlete honors as the department's lone spring sport. Tied for second were volleyball and basketball with six honorees apiece, while cross country and golf followed with five. The soccer team had four recognized for their efforts in the classroom, while tennis had three earn academic honors as well.

This year Alverno had five student-athletes earn scholar-athlete recognition for the fourth time in their careers as three-sport athletes Dani Hood and Mackenzie Mathies, two-sport athlete Cailey Jeske, as well as cross country's Leah Badke and softball's Andie Vandertie all earned for the academic recognition for their fourth consecutive year.

Five additional student-athletes earned NACC Scholar-Athlete praise for the third time in their careers highlighted by two-sport athlete Samantha Chapnick and Karli Selear, as well as Michelle Alexander of tennis, Chloe Fleming of golf, as well as Mary Kate Sulikowski from golf.

Eight more student-athletes earned their second scholar-athlete recognition, while Alverno also had 11 first-time student-athletes recognized for their efforts in the classroom. The full-list of this year's honorees are listed below, with previous year selections noted in parenthesis.

To be recognized as a NACC Scholar-Athlete, student-athletes must be a full-time student competing in the conference while maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or higher for the current academic year. Each academic year stands by itself for determination of this award.

Though Alverno does not administer traditional grades, instead, reaching and learning at Alverno are enhanced by assessment of a student's individual progress and by giving meaningful feedback. The Department of Athletics has worked with Alverno's Registrar Office and Faculty to review the records of student-athletes' performances to determine if the year's academic work would be comparable to a student from a school with a GPA of 3.25 or greater, which allows Inferno student-athletes to be recognized by the NACC as other member institutions' student-athletes are.
