MILWAUKEE – The Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference announced the final results from the 2019 Cans Across the Conference effort as the 13 conference members and conference office amassed a total of 50,536 items for local charities.
Leading the final standings for the ninth consecutive year was Alverno, with 18,721 items, donated to the Milwaukee Hunger Task Force. This year's donation was the fifth largest donation total in conference history, with the four largest also donated by Alverno including a league record of 27,203 items in 2015.
Donations were collected by Alverno's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) throughout the months of October and November, which included nonperishable food items and monetary donations by Alverno College's students, faculty, staff and families of students in a college-wide effort.
One of the leading contributors to Alverno's donations was the college's dining provider A'Viands, which partially matched the cash funds raised by SAAC over the two-month span. The money raised was used to purchase 320 turkeys that were then donated to Hunger Task Force of Milwaukee on Tuesday, November 20, that was used to feed several thousand people this past Thanksgiving.
"Winning is always nice, but the true reward is making a difference in someone's life for the better," commented Director of Athletics Heather Parkinson. "I am grateful for our student-athletes' work on this project and A'viands partnership in allowing students to donate money from their meal plans towards this worthwhile cause."
Alverno's total donation of 18,721 items accounted for over one-third of the conference-wide effort. Edgewood College was second, followed by Dominican and Marian Universities, all of which raised over 4,000 items. The final total was counted through December 20.
Since the conference's inception in 2006, the members of the NACC SAAC has organized 'Cans Across the Conference' as doing something together as a conference that helps each institutions' respective communities.
"This is an outstanding project that SAAC and all of the NACC student-athletes are undertaking. It will benefit many people," commented NACC Commissioner G. Steven Larson. "Our institutions and student-athletes have done a remarkable job collecting over 300,000 items the last 10 years."
Next year Alverno will look to add to its reign and become the first college in the league to total 10 Cans Across the Conference wins. Alverno currently leads the way with nine, while Rockford has two wins (2008-09), and Aurora (2007) and Concordia Wisconsin (2006), each have one win in the early years of the conference.
