MILWAUKEE, Wis.--Alverno College participated in the 12th annual of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference's "Cans Across the Conference" food drive collecting the equivalent of 18,787 canned food items.
This marks the eighth straight year that Alverno College has retained the traveling conference trophy. The members of Student Athlete Advisory Committee partnered with A'viands to donate 400 turkeys and non-perishable items to Hunger Task Force.
The 400 turkeys will feed approximately 7,300 people. In addition A'viands , Alverno College's dining service provider, matched every dollar donated and helped purchased the turkeys. This marks the eighth year A'viands has matched funds and made a donation.
"Our Student Athlete Advisory Committee has done a tremendous job organizing this food drive. To win Cans Across the Conference for the eighth straight year is a tribute to their commitment to community service," said Jessica Ott, Director of Athletics.

Since the conference's inception in 2006, the members of the NACC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has organized "Cans Across the Conference", doing something together as a conference that helps in each institution's respective community.
SAAC annually organizes the canned food drive as a community service competition amongst the 12 institutions in the conference. Each campus SAAC collects cans and other non-perishable items at their school during October and November to benefit a local charity.
In addition to food items, one dollar donated equals two cans, and toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.) are also counted.
