Inferno Weekly Preview For Feb. 6-12
Still seeking a postseason bid, the Inferno basketball team plays a pair of league games, this week in Alverno College Athletics.
Tuesday, Feb. 7
- 7 p.m., Basketball at Rockford University
Saturday, Feb. 11
- 7 p.m., Basketball vs. Lakeland University
Despite a pair of losses last week, Alverno (9-12, 9-7 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) still controls its possible run to the postseason with four games remaining in the regular season.
The Inferno still holds a two-game lead for sixth place over Milwaukee School of Engineering (10-11, 7-9 NACC), so any combination of three Alverno wins and MSOE losses will clinch a NACC Tournament berth for the Inferno. The Raiders hold the tie-breaker over Alverno, so the Inferno must finish at least a game ahead of MSOE.
Rockford (7-14, 5-11) hosts the Inferno Tuesday night in the second meeting of the season. The Regents have won two of their past three games including Saturday's 72-54 victory versus Edgewood College. Rockford gets to and makes the most free throws in the league with 22.5 attempts and 15.8 makes per contest.
Alverno eked out a 63-61 win a month ago in Milwaukee for its third straight win in the series, but the Regents still lead 9-8 all-time.
Lakeland (14-7, 12-4) will visit Reiman Gymnasium Saturday. The Muskies have already clinched a spot in the NACC Tournament but are still playing for seeding and possibly a conference title as they remain just two games back of first place. One of the top defensive teams in the league, Lakeland is first in steals per game (12.8) and defensive field-goal percentage (32.2), while second in both blocks per game (4.5) and points allowed per game (53.5).
The Inferno split the season series a year ago and will need to pull out the home win to do it again this year as the Muskies won the first meeting up in Plymouth, 74-67, to extend their all-time lead to 17-7.
Live broadcasts will be available for both games with links available on athletics.alverno.edu.
