Inferno runners fight heat and hills for sixth place finish

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- On an unusually warm September morning, the Alverno College cross country team grabbed a Northern Athletics Conference-high sixth place finish in Carroll University’s Pioneer Invitational, held at Minooka Park.

In addition to the heat, the Inferno had to manage a slightly tougher course than they’re used to, battling a number of hills and slow spots throughout the run.  Despite these conditions, Alverno head coach Tim Hanson was impressed with how his team ran.  “Given the conditions, it was great to see our runners maintain similar times to those of last week’s race,” said Hanson.  “It’s a great way to know that we’re improving.”

Two NAC teams, Maranatha Baptist and MSOE, placed below the Inferno in the meet, both of whom finished higher in last year’s NAC Championship.

MILWAUKEE -- With some key runners returning from last year's squad, including school record-holder Sarah Olson, and the addition of several talented runners, Alverno College Cross Country Head Coach Tim Hanson sees great potential for the 2009 season.

"One of the main differences between last year and this year is the way our second through fifth runners have been working together," said Hanson. "They should form a nice pack and be able to key off each other well."

Olson Battles for Second Place Finish at NAC Championship Cross Country Meet

MEQUON, Wis. -- After a determined performance that came down to the final few hundred meters of the home stretch, Alverno College cross country runner Sarah Olson fought her way to a second place finish at the Northern Athletics Conference women’s cross country championships on Saturday, Nov. 1, hosted by Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon, Wis.

Olson, a sophomore from Oconomowoc, Wis., ran the majority of the race in second place before being passed briefly by Aurora University’s Morgan Jacquette. However, Olson wasn’t about to give in.

“I could hear Tim (Coach Hanson) in the background saying ‘You can get her,’ and I realized he was right and that I could catch her,” said Olson. “I had run in second the whole race and I wasn’t really willing to give that up, so I kicked it in for the finish.”
