Stuber named cross country coach at Alverno

StuberMILWAUKEE -- Maria Stuber has been named head cross country coach at Alverno College, Director of Athletics Brad Duckworth announced today. Stuber becomes the third coach in the history of the program which will begin its 10th season this fall.

"It is very exciting!" Stuber said about starting her new position. "My life has been profoundly shaped by all of the excellent coaches that I have had the opportunity to work with and I am thrilled to get the chance to share this positive influence with the student-athletes at Alverno College.

"I am looking forward to helping each individual student-athlete reach their athletic, academic and personal goals. A coach has a unique opportunity to bring out the best in people, and if I do my job well, this will surely be the most rewarding part."

Hanson steps down as Alverno cross country coach

Tim HansonMILWAUKEE -- Tim Hanson has resigned his position as head cross country coach at Alverno College effective immediately.

Hanson produced two top 10 finishes at the Northern Athletics Conference championships and four all-conference award winners during his four-year coaching career at Alverno.

This season the Inferno finished eighth at the 2009 NAC Championship with a school-best 181 team points.

Cross Country team concludes season at NCAA Regional Championship

2009 NCAA Cross Country Regional ChampionshipWINNECONNE, Wis. -- The Alverno College women's cross country team concluded their season at the 2009 NCAA Midwest Regional Championship at Lake Breeze Golf Club this morning with a 36th place finish among the 39 teams to receive a team score.

The Inferno improved by six spots compared to last season, knocking off over 150 points from their score to finish with 1,048.

Schmidt named to NAC All-Sportsmanship team

Kelly SchmidtMILWAUKEE -- The Northern Athletics Conference announced that Alverno College senior Kelly Schmidt (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) has been named to the conference's 2009 Women's Cross Country All-Sportsmanship Team, which is comprised of 12 individuals who exemplified positive sportsmanship throughout the season. 

Head coach Tim Hanson and assistant coach Chris Young both had words of praise for Schmidt.  “Kelly has been a great addition to our program, both as a runner and a teammate.  We really wish we could have her on the team for more than one year.  She definitely deserves this honor,” said Hanson.

Young goes on to say, “Kelly has, in a single year, provided tremendous enthusiasm and experience as a runner, as well as senior leadership and a strong work ethic.  She is an all-around outstanding teammate and competitor.”

Alverno Cross Country battles brutal conditions to capture 8th place finish at NAC Championship

Renteria, Schmidt and OlsonMEQUON, Wis. -- A frigid wind was whipping and the puddles were numerous across the course at the 2009 Northern Athletics Conference Championships, but the Alverno College cross country team was able to disregard the less-than-ideal conditions to earn an eighth place finish out of 10 teams with 181 points on Saturday morning at Concordia University Wisconsin.

"We finished about where we thought we would," said Alverno head coach Tim Hanson. "We're happy we beat Maranatha since we haven't beaten them in the last three years. I think we ran really well despite the conditions. I don't think anyone used it as an excuse and our times were surprisingly pretty good for how windy and sloppy the course was."

Sr. ● P ● Softball
Goetz had a 2.90 ERA on the week, with 40 Ks in 41.0 innings pitched. To open the week she fanned 11 batters in a 3-1 upset win over Lakeland on Wednesday (the one run was unearned). Her third K of the game was her 200th this season. She also pitched all 15.0 innings in the 6-4 marathon loss to Edgewood on Saturday, striking out 15 Eagles--only walking one--and only two of the six runs were earned. Additionally she hit .333 on the week with six RBIs.
