Alverno falls to Wisconsin Lutheran in double overtime

Gabby AllenMILWAUKEE -- The Alverno College women's basketball team trailed the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors 9-0 in the all-time series but nearly broke the winless streak tonight at the Recreation Complex on the WLC campus falling to the hosts 88-85 in double overtime.

"One of our keys tonight was to play 40 minutes of good Alverno basketball," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "And we had to end up doing it for 50 minutes tonight. It was a heavyweight fight, and I wouldn't say we got knocked out, I think we lost on a judges' decision. We played a good basketball game, we just didn't win."

After several lead changes and 26 combined turnovers, Alverno (2-3, 1-1 Northern Athletics Conference) would find itself in an unfamiliar situation at the end of the first period--in the lead. The Inferno have led at the break in only one of their previous four games this season--a win over Lawrence University on opening night.

Late rally fuels Inferno victory over Cougars

MILWAUKEE -- Trailing by 10 points with just over 10 minutes to go, the Alverno College women's basketball team found itself in a familiar position this season. Yet an 11-0 run gave the Inferno some energy to pull out the 61-56 Northern Athletics Conference win over the visiting Cougars of Concordia University Chicago this afternoon at Reiman Gymnasium.

"We put too much pressure on ourselves sometimes," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "We have all these freshmen and first-year players playing big minutes for us and I think we finally just calmed down and played."

The Inferno were in a similar position opening-night against Lawrence, which the Inferno came back to win 75-63.

Freshman guard Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.) led the Inferno (2-2, 1-0 NAC) with 14 points in a 6-of-8 shooting performance and seven rebounds.

Falcons outlast Inferno in Forester consolation game; Sorgi named to All-Tournament team

Lisa SorgiRIVER FOREST, Ill. -- Concordia University Wisconsin defeated Alverno College, 70-64, in the consolation game of the Forester Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Lake Forest College this afternoon handing the Inferno their second straight loss.

"Two nights in a row we realized that we need to box out much better," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "But we responded to it, and the last 24 minutes of the game we rebounded as good as or better than we had all season. Unfortunately we didn't do it for a 7 minute stretch and it really hurt us in terms of the overall result of the game."

The Inferno (1-2) allowed the Flacons 13 offensive rebounds in the first half, which led to 13 second chance points, more than the difference in the game.

The Falcons had their biggest lead of the second half, 55-44, with 7:08 to play. The Inferno cut that lead to four with 1:19 remaining on a pair of free throws by freshman center Rachel Diedrich (Two Rivers, Wis.). But the Falcons responded with a 3-point shot by Asia Beckum (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) to extend the lead to 68-61 with a minute remaining.

Foresters topple Inferno

Gabby AllenLAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Lake Forest College used a 15-4 run at the end of the first half to increase their lead to double digits en route to a 92-58 victory over visiting Alverno College in the second semifinal game of the Forester Tip-Off Tournament.

"Lake Forest came out and really played a confident basketball game offensively," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "Anytime a team can shoot 60 percent from the floor, either you're giving up a ton of layups or they're shooting tremendously. I don't think we gave up a lot of layups tonight."

The host Foresters (1-1) shot over 60 percent in each half, including 44 percent (7-of-16) from the 3-point arc. Emily Weber led four Foresters in doubles with a game-high 18 points, going 4-of-5 on 3-point field goals.
