Alverno Student-Athletes Honored At Annual Awards Banquet

2011-12 Awards WinnersMILWAUKEE -- The Alverno College Athletics Department honored its teams and student-athletes from this last academic year at the annual Alverno College Athletics Banquet at the Alverno College Conference Center this past weekend.

Each of the six varsity teams honored three student-athletes with the awards of Most Improved Player, Inferno Award and Most Valuable Player.

Additionally the department's major awards winners were honored. These five awards are the Student-Athlete of the Year Award, Virginia Wagner Award, Sister Margaret Mary Martin Award, Faculty Scholar-Athlete Award and Newcomer of the Year Award.

Wilmore Represents Alverno With First Team All-NAC Accolade

WilmoreMILWAUKEE -- Alverno College junior catcher Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central) has been named to the All-Northern Athletics Conference First Team, as the league announced the softball awards for the 2012 season Wednesday morning.

Additionally, Erin Dulek (Rosholt, Wis.) was selected to the All-Freshman Team and Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) was the Inferno's representative on the All-Sportsmanship Team.

Villalobos Named Alverno Athlete Of The Week

VillalobosMILWAUKEE -- Softball student-athlete Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) has been named Alverno Athlete of the Week for events that took place April 23-29.

The junior first baseman had a team-leading .500 batting average in four games last week. Villalobos recorded multiple hits in three of the games for seven total hits in 14 at bats and did not strike out in 15 plate appearances.

Alverno Sets School Record With 17th Victory In Season Finale

Alverno Softball TeamMILWAUKEE -- Alverno College swept visiting Milwaukee School of Engineering in the final doubleheader of the season for the Inferno's 16th and 17th victories of the season today at Alverno Field and set a new school record for victories in the process.

Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central) belted a walk-off double in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Inferno a 4-3 extra-inning win in the opener, and Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) hit 4-for-4 and pitched a two-hit gem in the season finale, a 8-1 victory over the Raiders.

Stars Shutdown Inferno's Tournament Hopes

KresmerFOREST PARK, Ill. -- Alverno College was still in the running for the sixth and final spot in the Northern Athletics Conference softball tournament entering today's doubleheader at Dominican University, but the hosts swept the Inferno -- 15-1 and 7-1 -- and claimed the last tournament bid.

First-inning jitters got the better of the Inferno in both contests as the Stars (21-19, 14-10 NAC) posted 10 runs in the opening frame of the first game and four in the second game's opening inning. The Inferno was unable to bounce back in either game, and posted just a single run in each outing.
